For the Second Brothers Grimm story I choose for the PG category, is a story called The Brother & Sister. It is a story of a brother and his sister running away from home because of their evil stepmother treating them horribly. Coming across an enchanted river the brother is accidentally turned into a fawn! The sister and her brother the fawn find a cabin in the forest and decide to live there. Until one day when the king discovers them in forest and proposes to the sister. She accepts and they all live together in the kingdom, she becomes Queen and has a son. But then their evil stepmother finds their new happy life and plots against them, killing the sister in a fire. But she comes back as a ghost to see her baby and now stag brother, when the king sees her, she is magically brought back to life and the stepmothers plan is found out. When she is sentenced to death, the brother is magically changed back in to human form, and everyone lives happily. The story is obviously a little more complicated and has some dark overtones, but is generalized enough that it would be appropriate for children of an older age. Since the story is more general and normal, the illustrations take on a more realistic look, as well as incorporate the use of symbols and other narrative devices that would be appropriate for this demographic. The text is still playful and imaginative with the flare of ornamental lettering, bolding quotations, capitols, and italics for some emphasis in certain aspects of the story. As well the text still follows a mature structure and suits the category it represents. This book reaches a level of sophistication mixed with fun in a modern twist of a classical old story.
